Engage: Drivers of Engagement

Generally, Employee Engagement surveys encompass 20 to 40 diverse questions, but the main objective is not to solve individual problems or to look at individual questions’ scores in silos. Rather, the objective should be to understand how Employee Engagement overall can be improved.


Understanding what really “drives” Engagement within the company requires examining relationships between individual responses on questions considered “outcome” (eNPS, engagement, happiness, satisfaction) and questions considered “drivers” (workplace, manager, leadership, company performance, etc). To put it simply, you’d want to know:

  • which questions are most consistently answered positively among the most engaged employees?
  • and which questions are most consistently answered negatively among the most disengaged employees?

Betterworks Engage’s newest feature Driver Impact Analysis uses advanced statistical analysis to identify drivers (i.e. questions) that are highly correlated to the overall outcome (say, engagement). It runs through all the survey responses and analyzes the voting patterns of highly engaged employees and those of the least engaged employees.

From our initial runs, we found a valuable insight in one of our customers’ surveys. Questions under two factors – “Compensation” & “Work Life Balance”, pet peeves of every employee across the globe, predictably scored low in the survey. However upon running the Driver Impact Analysis, it was found that these two were low impact drivers and “Supervisor Feedback” was highly correlated to employee engagement.

Quickly, an action plan that included 30-day mandatory 1-on-1’s between employees and managers was launched, and they followed up with regular pulses to understand the progress. They are receiving positive feedback, even though it is early days

The true strength of Driver Impact Analysis lies in the fact that it easily prioritises focus areas using solid science in the click of a button – a task that typically takes weeks of subjective stakeholder meetings.

Once complete, Driver Impact is indicated in our reports by grey dots that prefix questions. The darker the shade, the higher correlation of the driver with the outcome. The questions are sorted in the descending order of their driver impact.
