Create/Edit An Objective

To create an objective, go to:

Objectives → Create Objective

Once you're on the objective creation page, you'll need to enter (at minimum):

  • The objective name
  • Start and due dates

You can select a preset based on your organization's business calendar. Or select a start and due date that are outside of the presets:

Notes:

  • Some organizations also require that users select a category for their objectives.
  • By default, you will be assigned as the objective owner, but can change this by selecting another user from the drop-down menu.
  • If you choose to add a description to your objective, the limit is 511 characters.

To edit an objective, simply search in the available tabs (i.e. My Objectives, My Peers, Top Company Objectives, etc.) or use filters. Once you've located the objective:

  • Click "..." (Additional Actions)
  • Select "Quick Edit" or "Bulk Edit" from the drop-down menu
    • "Quick Edit" will open a panel on the right-side of the page
    • "Bulk Edit" will take you to the objective creation page

  • Select "Quick Edit" from the drop-down menu
  • Make changes
  • Click "Save"

Objective Permissions & Privacy

By default, the objective owner's manager (if applicable) will be listed as an editor. If a manager change occurs, the previous manager will be replaced in the editor role by the new manager.

permission_settings_-_2.png

permission_settings_-_3.png

Permissions follow the "waterfall" design, meaning that any permissions coming from "upstream" will be inherited "downstream". If a user is an editor of a Top Company Objective, they will also be an editor to any objectives that are aligned to it.

Owner — This role is in charge of the objective. Objective completion is tracked in their Betterworks account and counts towards their overall progress.

Editor — This role can make any changes to an objective that the owner can make, but objective completion is not tracked in their Betterworks account.

Participant (private objectives only) — This role can contribute key results to a private objective as well as view some objective information and any downstream objectives contributing to the private objective. However, they cannot edit or delete the objective.

You can make an objective private by updating the permission settings:

Update Progress

You can update progress by clicking on the progress bar of an objective or key result:

Alternatively, you can click the Update Progress button at the top of the Objectives page:

Objective progress is color-coded based on how much of the work has been done compared to how close the due date is. The defaults are:

Green = On track >= 75%

Yellow = At risk >= 50%

Red = Needs attention = 50%

Notes:

  • Administrators can change these thresholds.
  • For more information about measuring progress and additional progress settings, see this article.

Create Categories

Note: You must be an administrator with Super Admin permissions.

Categories are a quick, simple way to get extra specificity when you’re sorting objectives or key results. Administrators can set categories that apply to every objective or key result in their organization and even require users to apply them. Use categories to separate objectives or key results, group them by company values or highlight themes.

To create a category, go to:

Admin → Program Management → Objectives → Settings → Categories

categories.png

Notes:

  • Categories will soon be moved to Admin → Program Management → Objectives → Settings → Attributes; along with scope and type.
  • Categories default to alphabetical order, but if you'd like them arranged differently, you can add a number to the beginning of the category name (i.e. "1. Professional Development").

Set Up Objective Scoring

Note: You must be an administrator with Super Admin permissions.

To set up objective scoring, go to:

Admin → Objectives → Settings → Assessments
