Overview
AI-Powered Adaptive Learning provides personalized skill development guidance and course recommendations within the employee Talent Profile. Employees can receive actionable AI-generated steps for developing or strengthening a skill and discover relevant learning content from integrated Learning Management System (LMS) providers.
AI-Powered Adaptive Learning works with Individual Development Plans (IDP). IDP provides the planning experience where employees identify skill development needs and create Development Goals. AI-Powered Adaptive Learning supports that experience by generating personalized development recommendations and identifying relevant learning content.
Recommendations can use information such as the employee's role, current proficiency, Development Goals, and other available development context. The recommendations are designed to help employees identify relevant learning actions without manually searching through a general course catalog.
The employee experience includes:
- Three AI-generated, actionable development steps for a selected skill.
- The ability to add individual AI recommendations to a Development Goal as milestones.
- The ability to regenerate development recommendations.
- The ability to copy AI-generated recommendations to the clipboard.
- A feedback mechanism for rating AI-generated recommendations.
- AI-assisted course discovery using content from integrated LMS providers.
- AI-ranked course recommendations based on the employee's skill development context.
Note: AI-generated development steps and AI course recommendations are available only in the employee self-view.
How AI-Powered Adaptive Learning works with Development Goals
When an employee opens a skill from their Talent Profile and indicates that they want to develop or strengthen the skill, Betterworks can generate personalized learning recommendations. Employees can select individual recommendations and include them as milestones in a Development Goal.
Employees can also browse courses related to the skill. Betterworks retrieves learning content from configured LMS providers and uses AI to rank relevant results based on the employee's skill development context.
Configuration
Prerequisites
Before employees can use AI-Powered Adaptive Learning, the following capabilities must be configured:
- The Professional Development Goals feature must be enabled.
- AI must be enabled for the organization.
- AI Individual Development Recommendations must be enabled.
- The PDP Skill Recommendations Module setting in Generative AI Settings must be enabled.
- At least one active and authenticated LMS integration is required for course discovery.
Enable Professional Development Goals
The Professional Development Goals feature must be enabled before AI Individual Development Recommendations can be used.
Access the setting from:
Admin > Talent Management > Development
Enable AI Individual Development Recommendations
- Navigate to Admin > Program Management > AI.
- Set AI for your organization to on.
- Set AI Individual Development Recommendations to On.
- Save the settings.
Note: The PDP Skill Recommendations Module checkbox in Generative AI Settings must be selected.
Configure LMS integrations
LMS connections, including API credentials, client IDs, and mappings, are configured in the organization's integration settings. Individual Development Plans use the LMS providers that are active for the organization.
The documented LMS providers include:
- Docebo
- Udemy Business
- LinkedIn Learning
Note: Without an active, authenticated LMS provider, course discovery does not appear. AI-generated text recommendations can still be available when the applicable AI and Development Goal settings are enabled.
Usage
Open skill development recommendations
AI development recommendations are available from the employee's Talent Profile.
- From the left navigation menu, open Talent Profile.
- Select a skill pill. You can select a skill from Skill I want to Develop, Skill I Have, or an AI Recommended skill.
- The Skill Details side panel opens.
- Select either I want to develop this skill or I want to strengthen this skill.
- Betterworks triggers the AI recommendation engine. A loading state is displayed while the recommendations are generated.
- Review the recommendations in the Skill Development section.
Use AI-generated skill development recommendations
After the recommendations load, Betterworks displays three specific, actionable development steps tailored to the selected skill, the employee's experience level, and their position.
Each recommendation contains a development step title and description. You can add individual recommendations to your Development Goal, regenerate the recommendations, copy the recommendations, or provide feedback.
Add an AI recommendation to your Development Goal
- Open the applicable skill in the Skill Details side panel.
- Review the recommendations under Suggested by AI.
- Select Add to my development goal for each recommendation that you want to include.
Each selected recommendation is converted into a separate milestone in the Development Goal. The milestone title uses the recommendation's step title, and the milestone description uses the corresponding AI-generated step description.
Regenerate skill development recommendations
If you want a different set of suggestions, you can regenerate the AI recommendations.
- In the Suggested by AI section, select Regenerate.
- The recommendations immediately enter a loading state while Betterworks generates new suggestions.
- Review the newly generated recommendations.
Note: Regenerating recommendations clears any previously selected Add to my development goal checkboxes. Select the recommendations you want to use after the new suggestions load.
Copy skill development recommendations
You can copy all AI-generated recommendations as plain text for use in external notes or offline tracking.
- Generate or open the recommendations in the Skill Development section.
- Select Copy at the bottom of the recommendations.
The recommendations are copied to your clipboard as plain text.
Provide feedback on skill development recommendations
You can provide feedback about the quality of AI-generated recommendations.
- Review the generated recommendations.
- Locate Were they helpful?.
- Select the thumbs up or thumbs down option to evaluate the AI output.
Browse courses for a skill
If your organization has an active LMS integration, you can discover courses relevant to a selected skill.
- Open the applicable skill in the Skill Details side panel.
- Under Take courses, select Browse Courses.
- In the Create Development Goal drawer, enter a search request when applicable.
- Select Search.
- Wait while Betterworks retrieves and ranks relevant learning content. A loading state is displayed while AI recommendations are generated.
- Review the available courses.
Betterworks uses semantic search to retrieve courses from integrated LMS catalogs. AI analyzes and ranks the results based on relevance to the employee's specific skill development need.
Review AI course recommendations
The course discovery experience can display two types of results:
- Recommended by AI: A filtered and ranked selection of the course matches identified as most relevant.
- Curated Courses: A broader list of relevant learning content retrieved from the LMS catalogs.
Once the AI recommendations load, Betterworks provides up to five top course recommendations. Three course cards are displayed by default.
- Review the visible course recommendations.
- To view additional recommendations, select Show more.
- To review additional information about a course, select View Details.
- To include a course in your Development Goal, select Add to my development goal.
Regenerate AI course recommendations
- Open the AI course recommendations for the applicable skill.
- Select Regenerate.
- Wait while Betterworks generates a new set of recommendations.
- Review the updated course recommendations.
Provide feedback on course recommendations
You can evaluate the AI-generated course recommendations using the feedback controls.

- Locate Were they helpful?.
