Overview

The Betterworks Matrix Manager feature allows an employee to be assigned more than one manager in Betterworks. This supports flexible organizational structures, such as project-based oversight, dotted-line reporting, or specialized functional guidance.

When enabled by an administrator, a matrix manager can view feedback related to their matrix reports, ensuring they have the context needed to support employee growth. This functionality applies to both Scheduled and Anytime Feedback and provides the following benefits.

  • Cross-Functional Visibility: Project leads and functional managers gain appropriate access to employee feedback, reducing fragmented oversight.
  • Standardized Governance: Maintains strict, administrator-controlled access to ensure viewing rights align with your organizational policies.
  • Coverage: Supports multi-manager structures by allowing matrix managers to monitor the progress and feedback of their reports.

Configuration

Administrators control matrix manager access at the feedback template level.

  1. Go to AdminProgram ManagementFeedbackTemplates.
  2. Create a new feedback template or edit an existing one.
  3. Scroll down to the Permissions section.
  4. Select one of the following options:
    • No Access
    • View
    • Edit
  5. Save the template.

Permissions

Access levels are strictly governed by the configuration chosen in the specific template.

Usage

Once permissions are granted, matrix managers will see a new Matrix Manager section in their Reporting Line. This section allows them to access the feedback on their matrix reports.

  • Feedback View: When viewing a report's feedback, the matrix manager will see the responses and the individuals who provided them based on the template's visibility settings.

FAQs

Can a matrix manager request feedback for their matrix report?
No. Matrix managers can only view feedback; they cannot initiate new feedback requests for their matrix reports.

Can a matrix manager select feedback providers?
No. The ability to select feedback providers is reserved for the primary manager or the employee, depending on the cycle configuration.

Is this available for all feedback types?
Yes. This feature extends to both Scheduled and Anytime Feedback cycles.
