Overview
User management in Betterworks allows you to:
- Create accounts for new users.
- Update the accounts of existing users (e.g., manager change, title change, etc.).
- Deactivate the accounts of users who are no longer with your organization.
We offer many options to address user management. Below is the process for the file upload option.
Process
Create Accounts
Note: You must be a Super Admin in Betterworks to complete the process.
- Download the Users - Template and Users - Field Guide.

(Optional) Create custom fields.
Note: If you create custom fields, replace the custom_field column headers in the Users - Template with the appropriate field keys. If you do not create custom fields, delete the custom_field columns. You can also delete the columns for any other fields you do not plan to use, as long as those fields are not required.
- Fill out the Users - Template using the Users - Field Guide for guidance.
- Download your completed file as a CSV.
Note: If you are given multiple CSV format options, select CSV UTF-8 (comma delimited).
- Click Admin (bottom of the left-side panel).
- Click User Management.
- Select Users from the drop-down menu.
- Click User List (top-left tab).
- Click Upload CSV (top-right corner).
- Click Browse Files.
- Upload your completed file.
- Resolve errors if applicable (e.g., missing last name, missing work email address, etc.).
- Click Upload.
- (Optional) Create a parent/child department hierarchy.
- Review the user data from the Users List for accuracy and completeness.
Note: You may need to sort the list or search by name.
Update Accounts
Note: You must be a Super Admin in Betterworks to complete the process.
- Download the Users - Template and Users - Field Guide.
Note: If you have custom fields, replace the custom_field column headers in the Users - Template with the appropriate field keys. If you do not have custom fields, delete the custom_field columns. You can also delete the columns for any other fields you do not plan to use, as long as those fields are not required.
- Fill out the Users - Template with your updates using the Users - Field Guide for guidance.
- Download your completed file as a CSV.
Note: If you are given multiple CSV format options, select CSV UTF-8 (comma delimited).
- Click Admin (bottom of the left-side panel).
- Click User Management.
- Select Users from the drop-down menu.
- Click User List (top-left tab).
- Click Upload CSV (top-right corner).
- Click Browse Files.
- Upload your completed file.

- Review the user data from the Users List for accuracy and completeness.

Deactivate Accounts
Note: You must be a Super Admin in Betterworks to complete the process.
- Download the Users - Template and Users - Field Guide.
Note: Delete the columns for all fields except employee_id, email, first_name, last_name, and deactivation_date. You do not need as much user data to deactivate accounts.
- Fill out the Users - Template with the deactivation dates using the Users - Field Guide for guidance.
- Download your completed file as a CSV.
Note: If you are given multiple CSV format options, select CSV UTF-8 (comma delimited).
- Log in to Betterworks.
- Click Admin (bottom of the left-side panel).
- Click User Management.
- Select Users from the drop-down menu.
- Click User List (top-left tab).
- Click Upload CSV (top-right corner).
- Click Browse Files.
- Upload your completed file.
- Resolve errors if applicable (e.g., missing last name, missing work email address, etc.).
- Click Upload.
- Review the user data from the Users List for accuracy and completeness.

FAQs
Do I need to include every column from the Users - Template?
No. You can delete the columns for any other fields you do not plan to use, as long as those fields are not required.
What file format should I use for the upload?
After completing the Users - Template, download it as a CSV file. If you are given multiple CSV format options, select CSV UTF-8 (comma delimited).
